Planting

Planting is a simple process, however it requires a delicate touch. Planting is seasonal and should take place in dormant periods when pests and diseases are less prolific. We can accommodate various sizes of planting projects, whether it be a one-off tree, a hedgerow or even a woodland. We will also explain, and provide information on, how to care for your trees after planting to ensure they thrive!

Top Tips for Planting

  • Planting - this is best to carry out during dormant periods.
  • Watering - throughout the first year try to water where possible to help with development.
  • Adding nutrients - when planting add nutrients to the ground to aid development, bone meal, fertiliser, manure or a root development enhancer is a great way to help with this and give your tree/hedge a head start!
  • Growth - don't panic, your newly planted hedge or tree won't grow much in the first season. It is busy using its energy to put on root growth to create a solid foundation for growth and nutrient uptake in years to come.
  • Ground care - make sure all the roots are covered and under the ground. Apply a layer of bark chippings to help lock in moisture during dry periods.
  • Brace properly - How you brace your tree makes a huge difference to it's future, you want to allow movement as this strengthens the tree, a brace should be a support only.
  • This photo from fine gardening explains how to brace, however please use a rubber tree tie not an inner tube!

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.
